Mobile MeshWalk: latest barcamp hybrid a Twitter on steroids
It wouldn’t work in Ottawa’s March weather and slush-soaked streets – but on Tuesday, March 20th San Francisco is bound to be pleasant for the first ever Mobile MeshWalk. This latest variant to “tech unconferences” was created by Shannon Clark. The events kicks off at lunch. Then the group breaks into three smaller clans and start walking to a prescribed location (the route is not specified). During the walk, one participant talks to their clan for a specified time with questions and answers. Then, onto the next speaker – all while walking.
The three clans intersect at times, so participants can change groups. By 5pm, the whole group reunites and goes drinking (and stuff…)
The interesting part about this is that participants are expected to document the “trip” with the equipment and services of their choice: digital cam, cell, mobile blog and of course twitter… (what-are-u-doing-now? what-are-u-doing-now? what-are-u-doing-now? what-are-u-doing-now? etc)
Maybe next year, the OttawaCamps organizers will consider a “Mobile MeshSkate” on the Rideau Canal (World’s longest skating rink)!!

Just to clarify one point for anyone reading this and interested in participating – we actually start tomorrow morning at 9am in South Park (a part of SF), there we will start the MeshWalk with introductions and then visit three or four local design firms, regrouping for lunch and then starting the MeshWalk. This morning designcrawl is an important part of this Mobile MeshWalk as it is an opportunity to hear from a number of leading design firms on their vision of the mobile future.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the MeshWalk tomorrow – go to http://orange-sf-pbwiki.com for the full details and registration process (which is free thanks to France Telcom’s sponsorship). I plan on running future MeshWalks on a regular basis, both here in SF and in other cities.
Shannon
Thanks for the clarification, Shannon!
Anyone in the SF area tomorrow looking to participate should check the MMW wiki for specific details and times!!
Meanwhile – being 4000 miles away – I’m envious!
Hey Mitch
The Mobile Mesh Skate is a great idea – and a nice way to celebrate the worlds longest skating rink and Ottawa’s tech community at the some time.
Count me in, Peter!
Hi Mitch,
Just wanted to let you know that I’m organizing another MeshWalk, this time in Palo Alto on July 25th. For this one, the theme is entrepreneurs and investors – we have over a dozen investors (angels and vc’s) joining us during the MeshWalk and Mohr Davidow Ventures is sponsoring it.
I’m also organizing a MeshWalk in NYC in early-Fall and I’m happy to help organize other MeshWalk’s in other cities. Perhaps it is my Chicago roots, but I’m not overly worried about cold – though rain or snow is another matter. In a colder climate, we’ll just plan on plenty of indoors stops along the way…
