The Corporate Motivational Poster: Who spiked the HR kool-aid?
If you worked at a large corporation in the 90s, you’ll remember the “motivational poster” trend. I’m betting that someone spiked the kool-aid at the HR convention, and everyone actually believed that these sappy posters actually motivated people. If you’re familiar with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you know that there’s no “poster” stage.
I still remember these posters plastered all over Nortel:
Excellence is the result of dreaming more than others think is practical and expecting more than others think is possible.
This one actually motivates me to write better.
The employee backlash of the motivational poster was the unmotivational poster. I like this Apathy one from Despair.com
Now it seems that software developers need to be motivated to care about the user experience. Experience Dynamics offers this $20 UX poster. Is a poster really going to melt the cold UX heart of a hardenned C# programmer??? I don’t think so. No matter what the message, a poster isn’t going to motivate. I do like the poster though. It would actually be useful in showing your customers that you care about the user.
