Improving Apple’s iMac UX

Electric SheepI just bought a brand new iMac from Apple and I have to say I’m thrilled to be using it. However, there are some things Apple could do to improve the User eXperience. For instance, why doesn’t Apple include more open source software pre-installed on the machine?

Ok, I know, it already comes with some great open source software such as Apache and there is a nice list of UNIX and open source apps on the Apple website, but it would have saved me hours of install time if Apple had included software such as this excellent list on OpenSourceMac.org and why not include XAMPP? It would introduce more Mac users to the wonders of open source. “There’s more to a Mac than what comes out of the box!” I also can’t believe Apple missed including this incredible screen saver: Electric Sheep. Don’t tell anyone, but it’s open source; you can even create your own sheep!

What about 2 power buttons? 1 for the computer as a whole and another for the screen.

Yeah the new one should be out soon. It’ll probably be a minor speed upgrade and I hear they’re dropping the 17 inch and perhaps dropping the price a little. Seeing what the upgrades were for the macbooks I decided I to go for it despite the upcoming iMac upgrade.

As for an extra screen button; I just leave it to the energy saver. I don’t see the need for the extra button. What they should do is make the on/sleep button more accessible for the elderly and the like. My choice would be a nice flip switch that you can actually feel with your fingers since you can’t usually see it. At least it’s better than what they had on the eMac. I’ve also never been a fan of those little slider switches Apple uses for the iPods either. Obviously cheaper to go with the difficult to use buttons. Maybe I’m just getting old.
