Blog Action Day: VCs see gold in green

altenergylogo.jpgSo today is Blog Action Day for the environment. Over 10,000 blogs around the world have signed up to write about environmental issues. Coincidently, next week the Dow Jones hosts the Alternative Energy Innovations conference in San Francisco. It’s a showcase for emerging companies to show their wares to potential investors. The list of participating companies is interesting. Some of them make me question whether they’re green at all.

Case in point: UsedCardboardBoxes.com usedbox.jpgThey refurbish used boxes and resell them for your next move… On the surface it might make sense – but how green is this really? UCB has to get the boxes via shipping, then they ship them back out to customers. All that shipping can’t possibly make up the energy saved by using a box twice. Admittedly, they only take in boxes if you have a minimum of a 1000 same size ones. Why not pick up used boxes at your local grocery or liquor store?

I did enjoy the cool boxy UX of UsedCardboardBoxes though!

It’s inevitable that the Green business would get the attention of the Greed business – after all – it’s just one consonant away!
