Balaclava: 360 degrees of the Ghost Town eXperience
A couple weeks ago we trekked out to explore the Ontario ghost town of Balaclava (near Renfrew). The town’s economy was driven by a saw mill built right in the middle of the Madawaska river in 1855. The mill must have been reasonably environmentally aware as it decided not to dump it’s sawdust in the river as was the custom of the day. Instead it built this rather cool looking sawdust burner in 1903. When the lumber ran out, the mill (and town) closed in 1959.
Most of the town’s buildings still stand, including the general store / gas station. In searching for info on Balaclava, I stumbled upon this interesting photography site that hosts 360 degree panoramas – including one showing a few of the houses of Balaclava – and the sky – and the ground! Totally dizzy but cool experience!
Note: You need QuickTime to view the panoramas.
