AppleTV and the Missing Applications

December 9th, 2007 by Jobe Roberts

I find it strange that Apple shuns some of its best third party developers. Take for instance the AppleTV, if you go to the Apple website and search for ‘AwkwardTV’ there are no results. Apple doesn’t want you to know about AppleTV’s best third party applications. After seeing the AwkwardTV site, I’m now on the verge of actually buying an AppleTV.

There’s even a very elegant and legal way to hack your AppleTV using patchstick for AwkwardTV. The steps are clear and easy, just upload to a USB drive, turn on your AppleTV and voilà instant hack without needing to crack open your box. Also be sure to check out AppleTVhacks.net

It’s really a shame Apple has not embraced 3rd parties as they finally have with the iPhone. I was excited to buy one until I realized how little it really offered. All the plug ins and developer work being done on the side at AwkwardTV and elsewhere have made it a far more attractive. I finally bought one when Costco was offering the low end model for $200. Making the patchstick isn’t a piece of cake, but it it works exactly as described, and there’s a lot of help out there if you need it. Mine is hooked up to a standard def TV (HDTV is NOT required!) and it has become exactly what I think the Apple TV should be: a multimedia machine capable of running all kinds of apps, not just an exention of iTunes for your TV. C’mon, Apple!

Thanks for the comments Craig. You know for $230 Cnd. I can get a refurbished 40 GB AppleTV. That’s pretty cheap. I think I’ll go for it.
