The Daze of Psychedelic Marketing
Billboard Magazine just released their list of the Top 25 Rock Concert Posters of all time. Number one on the list has been one of my favourites for ages: a 1968 San Francisco show featuring Hendrix and Mayall. (Unfortunately I was only 7, and my mother wouldn’t let me go.) The artist is Rick Griffin – one of the creators of the psychedelic style. The height of Griffin’s career was of course the 1960s where he produced cover art for the Grateful Dead, contributed to Zap Comix, and hung out at Ken Kesey’s acid parties. He died in 1991 in a motorcycle crash.
Promoting concerts and bands today don’t rely on posters. Why print when you have MySpace? Every big star also has their own site… One of my favs… The Kiss Army! (just kidding!)
