SXSW: It’s March… It’s Texas – Don’t settle for tea… go for the hold’em!

She left without leaving a number
Said she needed to clear her mind
He figured shed gone back to Austin
Cause she talked about it all the time
-a good ‘ol country tune by Brad Paisley
I’ve been a SXSW wannabe attendee for many years. It’s a great mix of technology, music and art, hosted in the unlikely cowboy town of Austin. This year’s keynotes includes everyone’s favourite pimply CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and Frank Warren of Post Secret. Some of the gazillion bands playing will be Toronto’s The Golden Dogs, Burnaby’s Matthew Good, and Ottawa’s The Acorn. The films premiering include the hilarious sounding “Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay”.
This event is massive 5-day festival that blends indie art with indie entrepreneurialism.
If your upstart new-media project is heading to Austin, the Canadian Federal government is willing to help. StartupNorth is reporting that Foreign Affairs is “perhaps” offering grants of a few hundred bucks to help out. If this is truly the case, the feds are really innovative on this. They have long been blamed for exclusively helping large companies. This would be an amazing show of faith for young startups in the internet economy. eBravo!
