So ya wanna be an inventor…

inventor.jpgHere’s a contest being promoted by Canadian Business Magazine and sponsored by Nytric, Rogers and some Bearskin Lawfirm… The second annual Next Great Canadian Invention has a top prize of $50,000 – mostly in services like feasibility studies, design, and prototyping. It’s an interesting opportunity, and unfortunately, lots of limitations. You do have to be a Canadian citizen to apply. You can’t be a resident of Quebec though: perhaps Canadian Business got the last referendum’s results wrong? Or maybe there’s no inventors in Quebec? Actually it’s likely because in Quebec, all contests have to be approved, with bribes, by the province’s dictatorial lottery agency

The main problem with the contest is that the applicant is responsible for secure their intellectual property rights before entering. The contest reserves the right to publish your invention, without notice or payment. Such public disclosures assures that your inventions becomes public domain – barring you from patenting it. On the other hand, winning the contest might help you get that gadget to market instead of having it simply rot in your head. You have until May 2 to submit your idea.
