DNA-Based Social Networks: Googleribonucleic acid?

You may have read Time’s 2008 list of top innovations. Topping it is a company called 23andMe. For $400, you get a mail order kit which enables you to send a saliva sample back to a genetics lab. Within a few weeks, they send you an email and access to online reports of your genetic makeup, including family history, over 90 different disease predispositions, and even what sort of ear wax you have… (Who knew there were different types, and that it actually matters!). This is all quite fascinating – especially to a science geek. The demo reports are very slick – much like Google Analytics…

The weird part is the social net feature of the company. Once your DNA profile is online you can share it with others, and compare traits with family members and friends…

23andMe is co-founded by Anne Wojcicki – a biologist married to Sergey Brin, co-founder of everything “g”. Google is coincidently the primary funder.

Eerie! I suppose it’s just a matter of time that you’ll be able to Google your friends’ Tardive Dyskinesia, Colorectal Cancer risk, or Alcohol Flush Reaction. Of course you probably already know their Alcohol Flush Reaction… though you might not know their earwax type!
