Greening the Poppy

Across many nations, millions of poppies have been given away to raise funds for veterans groups in advance of Remembrance Day. In Canada, our poppies are made of plastic and a simple metal pin. This design is ready for a make-over. First the pin fastenner doesn’t work well – people are always losing their poppies. I’ve lost three already! Also, the poppies’ fuzzy plastic substance isn’t bio-degradable, nor easily recycled…

England produces paper poppies with a plastic stem that acts as a fastenner. New Zealand’s original poppies were made from silk.

Maybe we can challenge industrial design students from around the world to create a poppy for greener times!

I thought the same thing. Surely something paper/carboard would do.

How a bout a real poppy? superglue the pin on the back?
