apparently i invented wireless networks. lol

wirelessnetworksI was granted a new patent by the USPTO today. That’s not unusual. Jobe and I have oooodles of patents. This one is odd though… for Patent # 7,486,628 there are three unusual things…

1. I filed this thing in 1999. I haven’t heard “boo” from examiners or lawyers. Suddenly it pops up 10 years later. (patents are usually granted after 3-4 years)
2. This is a pretty wide-reaching patent – it may not have been obvious in 1999 – but is everywhere today.
3. The owner of the patent – Nortel Networks is in bankruptcy protection. Unfortunately, Nortel has never had the ability/will to gain from its innovation portfolio. sad.

Here’s the abstract. (by the way, I don’t make a dime off this!!) :( …and no, I didn’t invent wireless networks…

Currently, networks are used within most enterprises to allow for sharing of resources such as printers and to allow for central server features to be available such as backup operations, shared files, and internal email. With the introduction of the third generation of wireless communication networks in which a mobile station can have an always on capability, private networks can now be established between mobile stations. In these implementations, the mobile stations each have a Home Location Registration (HLR) and a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address. The mobile stations within a private network are listed within a table stored in the intelligent peripheral by their HLRs. The intelligent peripheral regulates the flow of data units within the wireless network by determining if the sender of a packet and the intended recipient are within the same private network.
