Patent Wars: Apple tries to keep up to Zune

Do you know what makes Zune a superior mp3 player? It supports file formats that were invented back in 1933! yep 76 year old files – namely – FM radio. Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s cunning visionaries, Apple published a patent application this week for a METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING AN ACCESSORY HAVING A TUNER. A tuner! Maybe those iPhone rumours are true after all. We hope that Apple goes beyond FM though. Why not throw in AM, Shortwave, and police band!
On the Microsoft patent front, they’ve published some interesting concepts this week. One is a COMMUNITY-BASED SOFTWARE APPLICATION HELP SYSTEM. Users will be able to share “how-to” videos with other users. CREATING VIRTUAL APPLICATIONS describes Microsoft’s extension of their VM technology to package a VA (virtual application) that includes an XML-based sequencer to configure and create the package.
