They were just granted a patent for determining the presence state of a user:

A method for determining a presence state of a presence entity comprising the steps of: receiving presence information associated with a presence entity; receiving a composition rule associated with the presence information; displaying textual information relating to the composition rule to a user only when a presence conflict exists; and applying the composition rule to the presence information in order to determine a presence state for the presence entity

Now if only they could invent a decent phone to receive that presence information…

A system and method for changing network behavior based on presence information includes detecting one or more presence indicators. The one or more presence indicators indicate presence information. An electronic persistent presence (EPP) is formed based on the one or more presence indicators. It is determined whether to change the network behavior from a first user policy to a second user policy according to the EPP. The second user policy associated with the EPP is implemented according to a determination that the network behavior is to be changed.

The interesting part is that the network component will be open to a number of “presence indicators”. I’m interpreting this as meaning that future networks will be able to natively respond to new presence indicators such as relationships and context. This is the kind of new presence often touted by Alec Saunders in his famous Voice 2.0 manifesto.

Although the MSFT patent cites our own call context patent as prior art, I really fail to see any additional innovation here. I also presume that this patent is part of a larger cluster that will define Microsoft’s integrated telephony platform.

Here’s part of the abstract:

…the caller also identifies some contextual information for the telephone call such as, for example, the subject, importance and/or nature of the telephone call. The caller computing system then constructs a call invitation data structure that includes both an invitation to the callee to engage in a telephone conversation and the user-entered identification of the context of the telephone call.
