SM is based in Ottawa Canada - birth home to comedian Tom Green. (A good friend of ours BTW ) Ottawa is also home to some significant business activities in the green sector. I’m not talking about “green-washing” - but real technological solutions. One VC firm based here focuses on [...]

Never had a holiday on the lovely beaches of the Principality of Sealand? You’re not likely. Sealand is about 5 miles east of the UK. It’s a man-made gun platform built during the second world war. In 1967, retired major Paddy Bates took over the platform and declared it a sovereign [...]

It had to come… Launching this fall is this grand social net site. There doesn’t even appear to be a closed beta going on. I guess these folks have a solid business plan because TheAlarmClock reports Grandparents.com just got funded by Laser Partners and is now headed by Jerry Shereshewsky - a [...]

The VCs seem to think it’s a good idea… NY-based MeetMoi just scored a $1.5m investment. Mashing Location Based Services and dating sites, MeetMoi allows registered users to communicate with people near them. Unlike free web2.0 services, they charge 99 cents for 10 text messages. There’s a few issues: [...]

Although it loses marks for poor spelling, BC-based CelPhinder is a cool startup that provides 911 location locking as well as “panic button” functionality for mobile workers. I’m surprised more companies haven’t capitalized on the personal safety / paranoia segment. There’s already a huge industry in pager-style panic buttons - so [...]

Unfortunate ad placements are funny. Well maybe not for the advertiser. Boston-based ScanScout announced yesterday a $7 million Series A investment. Their product helps advertisers position their ads next to appropriate or relevant video. I hope this doesn’t eliminate unfortunate ad placement!
Here’s a recent ad for Yahoo at AT&T Park… (via The Baseball Zealot)

I’ll admit a strange quirk about myself - I actually enjoy presenting to VCs. Given a reasonable set of expectations, a good VC can give you constructive feedback and occasionally, valuable insights (and it’s free!). Before I first got exposed to this world, I had assumed that all VCs were the same - I imagined [...]
