Ottawa was formerly known as an epicenter of telecom expertise. Now the telecom folks are applying themselves to fascinating crossover ventures. One great example is EcoVu – using photonics to purify tainted water. Next up for EcoVu… turning water into whiskey!

SM friend Alec Saunders announced yesterday that his Ottawa-based company iotum secured funding from VERDEXUS as well as appointing chairman Randall Horward. Now iotum has two Horwards!

iotum has had great success in the past few weeks with its Facebook application Free Conference Calls. It offers a super easy interface to schedule a call, announce a topic, and invite participants. Calls can be private or public. The later is especially interesting – you never know who’s going to join the party!

The app is also gaining traction – Alec says they’ve quickly grown to 30,000 registered users. Facebook says that 888 of those are regular daily users.

To date, its status as a micronation has not been recognized by international courts, although the Bates family has run lucrative businesses from there: selling Sealand currency, postage stamps, passports and lordships.

This September marks its 40th anniversary. Today the island announced that it has negotiated a multi-million dollar investment with a Russian group. Why? Sealand has become a major secure data center – soon to be hosting the Sealand online casino. With the investment in a new satellite, it will be able to freely offer internet “services” that would otherwise be illegal in most countries. Just what we needed – more gambling and porn, and all the spam that comes with that!

The UX challenge it designing a mechanism that allows the user to easily and discretely set off the alarm without being discovered by their attacker. When the alarm is triggered, police is automatically notified with the caller’s GPS coordinates. There should also be the ability to continuously track the cell’s GPS – especially if the attack is an abduction. There obviously needs to be safeguards to prevent false alarms.

The company just closed a round of angel financing… maybe they can invest a bit on their web site which right now consists of a single page. Product info is only available by downloading a Powerpoint deck or PDF brochure (which actually doesn’t describe the product either). I’m guessing there isn’t a marketing person on their founding team! :)

Given a reasonable set of expectations, a good VC can give you constructive feedback and occasionally, valuable insights (and it’s free!). Before I first got exposed to this world, I had assumed that all VCs were the same – I imagined them similar to banks – you know one, you them all. What I quickly discovered was that every firm has a distinct personality.

These are a few favourites. I was first introduced to Leo Lax at Skypoint for “training”. The personality – a harsh wake-up call with kind eyes. Off to Atlas in Boston – easy-going, attention deficit, let’s meet over coffee in the hotel lobby… JL Albright – attentive, motivational (and a great view from their Toronto office!) VenturesWest – lesson learned: Even if the head says yes, doesn’t count if the feet say no. Battery Ventures (this was right after their massive IPO for Akamai) reserved, assured, distant. Their parting comment after my 15 minute presentation “thanks, this wasn’t a waste of my time”. errr.. you’re welcome??

I also spent a long time with Jefferson partners. Personality – resourceful, roll up the sleeves. Lesson learned – from the VC perspective, their investment in your company is part of their bigger plan. They may like your business, but it’s likely that other concerns have been factored in, such as leveraging another of their investments.

You might have noticed I haven’t said anything about cash. By examining the personalities and exploring ways to develop an ongoing relationship, your VC meetings can be more positive and productive. Sure, after that… show me tha money.

Maybe VCs should publish their Myers-Briggs typology on their web sites!

Wow! an ONSLAUGHT! But… such tools will be vital to ensure optimal performance for the next generation of software – and performance is a big part of the user experience. OFTEN the GUI’s performance is an afterthought – attention is only brought to it if the thing grinds to halt. Unfortunately most software is designed / architected for features not performance.

Perhaps because of the success of the wii controller, investors have a newfound fever for bizarre I/O devices. Such is the case with emotiv. They have raised a pile of VC cash… Their product is a headset that senses what you think and feel. From the look of it – it mimics the points on the skull that are measured for electroencephalograms – measuring your brain pulses. With trained technicians drilling electrodes into your head – they might detect signs of epilepsy. Wearing a headset can do what??? I am more than skeptical.

It’s possible the experience is engaging for gamers… engaging enough for a VC or two… even engaging enough for eweek to rate the companies technology as highly disruptive.

I’ll go on the record as rating it snake oil – unless proven otherwise. (in which case – this startup should have raised a ton more VC cash!!)
